Current high quality CDR/DVDRs generally have a read lifetime of around 50-100 years. Certainly not eternal, but currently estimated CDR lifetimes are better then we can expect from most photographic negatives, paper documents, VHS or cassette tapes. Plus, if these are stored in digital form, they can be reduplicated in perpetuity as storage mediums progress in the future.
